Meet the Makers:
“We're Ab (they/them) & Al (she/her), and we've been making candles together since 2017. We love getting to build Queer Candle Co. side by side, and make products that we love at the same time.
Each candle is topped with a visual representation of the scent (generally herbs, but sometimes including dehydrated fruits or salt rocks)! Our soy wax candles burn longer and cleaner than paraffin, and our attention to detail in sourcing materials means that our fragrances are fresh, non-toxic, and authentic!
As a queer-couple-owned business, it's important to us that we use part of our profits to promote visibility and amplify the voices of members of our community - specifically the voices of trans women and non binary people of color. That's why we donate 10% of our monthly earnings to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, an NYC grassroots organization working to "guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence."
The #1 question we get from shoppers is "What makes the candles queer?" The answer is layered:
As a queer-owned business, it’s important to us that the platform we build is reflective of our community. We love making candles, but it’s not the only important part of QCC. Our whole business, starting from the name and permeating through the rest of our work is formed around a focus on queerness. We are proud to hire other queer folks and to make an effort to build community with and elevate other LGBTQ+ businesses. Through the donations we make to SRLP, we are allowing our customers to vote with their dollar and not only support our queer business, but also support the larger LGBTQ+ community.
In addition to its association with the LGBTQ+ community, the word “queer” is a great reflection of our brand: unique and unusual! We’ve taken an everyday household item and found ways to make them special and full of intention.”
